A night for experimental, underground, and unusual art. ¡BESO DE LENGUA! (dir. José Luis Zorrero; Mexico) follows a couple on their first date looking to spice things up with an unusual game. LAVINIA! (dir. Micah Spayer; U.S.) is a deep mental dive into the subconscious brain of a woman on the crest of a breakdown or a breakthrough. Russell Sheaffer’s DECOMP DISCO (dir. Russell Sheaffer; U.S.) takes a 16mm copy of “Disco Fever” (1978) and queers the narrative of two quarreling women on “Cybil’s Disco Jet.” TELEHEALTH TOP SURGERY (dir. Liam Coerr; U.S.) is a video piece exploring (psychic) surgery, body modification, and other gender affirming procedures as a site of trans healing and identity building, embracing the visceral nature of surgery and the agency that access to surgical transition procedures gives trans patients over the fate of their bodies. CHERRY, PASSION FRUIT (dir. Renato José Duque; Portugal) is an animated short about nature and desire: “Inside a mysterious rainforest, lust takes shape between love and pain.” Finally, in BRISKET (dir. Kenzie Elizabeth; U.S.), a blood-soaked bride on the verge of a breakdown evaluates her situation.
Itzcóatl and Moisés are on their first date. After a couple of hours of getting to know each other, they “play” an unusual and riveting game.
LAVINIA! is a deep mental dive into the subconscious brain of a woman on the crest of a breakdown or a breakthrough. We find a woman of a certain age bombarded by her life's story as she finds herself in a psych ward after a night of self-induced debauchery.
Taking place entirely on "Cybil's Disco Jet," DECOMP DISCO places us in the midst of a disco-fueled quarrel between two women in 1978. Created by burying a 16mm print of "Disco Fever" (1978) in the earth and allowing the film stock to begin its decomposition process, DECOMP DISCO queers the gazes of its characters, imagining lust in the glances of the two women. Through repetition and degradation, this found footage film reclaims and reimagines a campy piece of film history straight from the dust bin.
This video piece explores (psychic) surgery, body modification, and other gender affirming procedures as a site of trans healing and identity building. It embraces the visceral nature of surgery (not shying away from the blood, guts, or horror) but also the agency that access to surgical transition procedures gives trans patients over the fate of their bodies. The video was shot in December 2022, two months prior to the director’s top surgery in February ‘23, after over a year of planning, preparation, waiting, and schedule changes for the procedure.
