Written, directed, and starring Juan Pablo di Pace, the co-lead from last year's opening night film THE MATTACHINE FAMILY, DUINO is a captivating exploration of memory, infatuation, and self-discovery, a story based on di Pace’s own youth attending an international boarding school in Italy. Matias, struggling to finish a movie about his first love, receives an unexpected invitation to revisit his past and reconnect with Alexandre, the wild, beautiful extrovert who captured his heart as a teen. The film deftly interweaves footage from his youth with present-day reflections as he emotionally processes his past while editing his film. Set against the stunning backdrop of Italy’s Adriatic Coast, DUINO’S lush settings and the class differences between Matias and Alexandre are reminiscent of SALTBURN, but this poignant tale of unrequited love, with deeply affecting performances by its leads, couldn’t be more different.
